These birds freak me out a little, they're very Jurassic looking. Nice capture.

I've taken a few shots of these myself down on the canals. Because the canal boats approach so slowly you tend to be able to get closer. I may upload one now having seen yours.

Wow, I wasn't aware that they had herons in the U.K. They are quite rare here in Ontario, Canada with their habitate being decimated and are very timid toward humans. Very hard to get close. With this bird, I followed it for a couple hours to get a decent shot. Everytime one gets close, it takes off. I wasn't even that close as you can see I used a 300mm lens.

They are more common here now than they were several years ago. There has been a big push in recent years to preserve more of the countryside in the UK, especially along the canals. Shame it's the tourist industry that's pushing this move though.

It's a good photo but you can see where it's at full zoom. Shame you couldn't get closer.
